We have just finished a basement renovation, and I want to tell you all about it, in case you have a future basement project on the horizon.
I have lived in my home 19 years. The home itself was built in 1991, so many of the projects we’ve done have been out of necessity.
Some, though, have been to improve our living space. Just because we wanted to do it.
Like the windowless basement – 400 square feet of finished space, but hopelessly out of date, dark, and kind of smelly.
Here’s the deal.
The walls were a cream color, the carpet was a brown Berber, and the TV stand on the floor stuck out into the room, making the room appear smaller.
The teeny bathroom had splotches of color on the floor, walls, and sink/countertop, from the time when my older daughter lived in the basement and threw hair dyeand cosmetics all over.
In short, it was all a hot mess.
Enter the crew that redid our bathrooms, and magic was about to happen. (Did you miss Emily’s post about her bathroom reno? Click here!)
Basement Renovation: Paint
I’m into a white paint phase, both because it’s timeless and clean-looking. The main area, bedroom, and teeny bathroom were all painted bright white.
Basement Renovation: Flooring
All three rooms now have gray COREtec flooring, which is water-proof, in case the basement floods. I love the seamless look and, despite what you might think about the dark color, the walls balance it out and actually make the rooms look bigger.
Basement Renovation: TV
We don’t watch a lot of TV, but both my husband and I disliked the TV stand and speakers we had. To make the area look nicer and be more updated, he bought a TV mount, along with accessory mounts for the DVR player and a new Bose sound bar. Notice what’s missing in the picture above? He cleverly hid the wires in the behind the wall, which is a stairway. The result is stunning!
Basement Renovation: Bathroom
Along with the new floor and paint, we installed a new sink, which looks much more modern. New towels and a rug complete the look.
Basement Renovation: Miscellaneous
I purchased rugs, a comforter, and wall décor, for the bedroom and main area.
Future project: Replace carpet on basement steps. I think we’ll wait awhile before another reno!
