How-to Make An Antique Pressed-Flower Arrangement Beyond the Kitchen
Shadowbox Display for Former Treasures

You’ve probably seen an adorable child holding a chalkboard as the new school year starts, showing her grade, teacher, and other information, right?

Did you know those chalkboards can cost big $$$? Yeah, me either. (My girls are almost 21 and almost 17.)

A friend suggested I go to a flea market, purchase an old picture, and upcycle it into a back-to-school chalkboard to give as a gift to another friend with a 4 year old.

Believe me: This is SO easy anyone can do it.

This project can be as detailed as you want or as simple as you like.

Use templates or not.

It’s your call!

Upcycled Chalkboard Process:

Here’s the picture I chose from the flea market. Can you guess why I liked it?

chalkboard The frame!

I loved the gorgeous gold peeking through the black. It looked retro to me, so I snapped it up for $6.00.

When I got home, I used chalkboard paint to cover the glass, using two coats. I allowed a couple of hours of drying time between coats.

This photo shows why I needed two coats.

Notice that some areas weren’t properly covered?

(Note: I learned afterwards that it’s best to take 80 grit sandpaper and sand the glass before painting it, which will eliminate bubbling of the paint.

)For the first coat, I used horizontal strokes; for the second, I used vertical strokes.

Next, we were ready for the lettering component.

I said “we” because my younger daughter volunteered to do it. (I immediately said yes, by the way, so it would be legible! )

She decided to go for a simple sign, using red, white, and blue chalkboard markers.

Here’s the result.

Of course, yours could be a larger chalkboard, with more information and different colors.

Better still – Ask your back-to-schooler and work on the project together!
