If you’re looking for a healthier version of chili, you’ve come to the right place!
As you know from my other foodie posts, I like to keep it as healthy as possible, as much as possible.
I have two chili recipes: one with ground beef and one with beans. I usually make the ground beef recipe, but my husband and some of our friends prefer the healthier version.
I thought you might like it, too.
It’s very easy to make, which is a nice bonus.
Simply open and rinse three cans of your favorite beans. I use kidney beans, cannelli beans, and black beans.
Rinsing them will ensure that the salty taste is gone; that way, you can manage the level of salt you include in the recipe. I normally use just a pinch.

To that, add a can of diced tomatoes or, if you prefer a smoother texture, add a can of tomato sauce.
I usually add a couple of pinches of sugar to the mixture at this point. I’m not into a super-tarty taste!
Add in the remaining spices and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and let simmer for an hour or more.
This simple dish is hearty and filling, not to mention much healthier than the beef version, with less fat and fewer calories.
Also, there’s a ton of protein that will you keep you filled-up for hours.
Let’s not forget, too, that the beans are also less expensive than the ground beef.
If you’re serving a crowd for Game Day or another get-together, you can make a huge batch for not a lot of money!

Economical and Healthy Three-Bean Chili
A delicious, but economical and healthy, alternative to regular meat chili!
- 3 15 oz. cans of your favorite beans
- 1 15 oz. can of diced tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 2 c. water
- 1 T. of onion flakes
- 1 t. garlic powder
- 1 t. pepper
- 3 T. chili powder
- Salt to taste
- A large pinch of sugar
- A couple of small pinches of cinnamon
- Open and rinse three cans of your favorite beans.
- Add to pot.
- Open a can of diced tomatoes or tomato sauce and add to the pot.
- Add the remaining ingredients.
- Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer.
- Simmer for about an hour.
- Serve and enjoy!
